Comments on Swiss neutrality
The neutral state and neutrality of opinion

(6 March 2026) In the debate surrounding Swiss neutrality, there are repeated calls for Switzerland, i.e. the Federal Council and Parliament, to morally condemn aggressors and violations of international law.

The fact is that only a consistent neutral stance can keep Switzerland out of conflicts. The neutral state must focus on the conflict itself and not on a specific party to the conflict. By not supporting one side of the conflict, neutral Switzerland can contribute to conflict resolution by offering mediation and reaffirming its role as a protective power. The Federal Council and Parliament must clearly reject violence, war and terror from all sides, call for talks and thus promote peace in the best possible way.
The uncompromising stance of neutral Switzerland is also central to the internal cohesion of this multicultural and multi-religious country. Instead of moralising, Switzerland, i.e. the Federal Council and Parliament, must consistently refrain from power politics.
Swiss citizens and the media do not have to remain neutral in their opinions but can form a critical opinion on any conflict and also express it publicly.
